Intermediate ladies stunned with late Leitrim goals as victory is snatched in injury time. (Report from Ollie Colgan).

Leitrim 2-13 Roscommon 1-10:

Roscommon Intermediate ladies will wonder for a long time how they left Kilglass with a six point defeat to visitors Leitrim after leading for most of the game and having over 60 % possession, but that is exactly what happened as two very late injury time goals by the outstanding Ailbhe Clancy and the ever dependable Aine Tighne gave victory to Leitrim by six points in this Connacht intermediate championship encounter played at the Roosky venue.

Both side seemed very nervous at the start as scores were hard to come by as with 16 minutes gone the score line was on 2 points to 1 in favour of the Leitrim ladies with Roscommon’s point coming from midfielder Tara Taylor in the third minute. Leitrim’s two opening points coming from Clancy and Roisin McHugh. It has to be said Roscommon were guilty of some terrible wides in this opening period and also some wasteful passing and shot selection as they failed to capitalize on their possession. Roscommon did equalise in the 17th minute through a splendid Aisling McAulliffe, then they took the lead in the 18th minute through a well taken Jenny Downey point. Then in the next two minutes both sides exchanged points from Aine Tighe Leitrim and jenny Higgans Roscommon. Then the half’s decisive score came in the 30th minute when Higgans was put through by Downey and struck the roof of the net to give the home side much deserved breathing space. But the visitors responded well with two well taken Clancy points one from a difficult free to leave just two in it at the break with Roscommon leading by 1-04 to 0-05. These two scores were vital to Leitrim as the came just as it appeared Roscommon were getting away a little bit.

The second half began somewhat similar to the first with the first score not coming until the 4th minute of the half from Roscommon’s Rebecca Finan. Natalie McHugh added a free in the 36th minute to suddenly leave Roscommon five ahead. Leitrim introduced Laura O Dowd (half time) and Michelle Heslin (35th Minute) and it was these two players who began the Leitrim comeback. They both scored a point apiece in the 39th and 42nd minutes with

A Roscommon point in between coming from Downey. Then Leitrim’s attack finally began to click and four unanswered points from Tighe (two), Clancy and Heslin left them a point ahead. Two McHugh pointed frees put the Rossies back in front with five minutes left plus injury time. Leitrim equalised in the 56th minute through another Clancy pointed free but Mchugh put the Rossies in front again in the 59th minute in what was now a very tense but exciting match as the game entered injury time and injury time that turned the game on its head. Leitrim drew level again in the 60 minute through another O Dowd point but the in the first minute of injury time the games major  turning point came when Tighe slipped a ball through to Clancy who buried it in the bottom corner of the net to suddenly three points up. Before Roscommon hardly had time to catch their breath Leitrim had goaled again in the 63rd minute through their marque forward Tighe to leave the game beyond Roscommon. Roscommon tried in vain to penetrate the Leitrim defence in the last couple of minutes but failed to do so and when the referee sounded his whistle in the 65th minute it was Leitrim’s day on a final score line of Leitrim 2-13 Roscommon 1-10 a result which was a little harsh on the home side.
