“Minor girls begin campaign with emphatic win over Sligo”

The Cox steak house sponsored Roscommon minor ladies began the defence of their Connacht title with a big win over Sligo in Kiltoom on Wednesday last on a score line of 4-19 to 1-09. This was a re-arranged fixture for Roscommon as the original fixture was postponed due to bad weather the previous Friday. Played in prefect weather in front of a nice size crowd Roscommon started brightly with a brace of points from Ellen Irwin before Sligo got on the scoreboard with a point from Roisin Molloy. Roscommon then began to get into their grove with points from Kelley Colgan (2), Onagh Kelly (2) and another Irwin point before a super move ended in a goal from Kelly to leave the Ros girls in a comfortable position with 22minutes gone leading by 1-09 to 2 points. Sligo’s lone reply coming from Sarah Cunney. then we had a 10 minute delay due to floodlight failure and this seemed to throw off the home side a little as it was Sligo who started better after the restart with a goal from Molloy and a 2 points from Lisa Powel. Suddenly it was only a 5 point game but the Roscommon girls woke out of their slumber and pointed twice through captain Aimee O Connor and Colgan before a second Kelly goal gave them the breathing space their dominance deserved at the break to lead by 2-12 to 1-06.

The second half was a much more controlled effort from the Roscommon girls as the started very brightly with points again from Irwin (2), Colgan and O Connor to leave them in control. Sligo to their credit kept plugging away and added a couple points of their own but Roscommon put the game beyond doubt when O Connor goaled midway through the half to leave them in a commanding and unassailable lead. this afforded the management to offload the bench in an effort to get some valuable game time for all the squad. another O Connor goal with five minutes to go put a better gloss on the scoreboard and it was no more than the home side deserved. Roscommon rang out comfortable winners on a score line of 4-19 to 1-09.
