Match Report

LIDL Ladies National Fooball League Division 3

Meath 4-15,

Roscommon 1-7

Meath easily defeated Roscommon to go top of division 3 at Dunganny on Sunday last. The match was played on a synthetic surface despite the fact that there were two unused grass pitches at this Meath centre of excellence venue. Meath were well used to this venue and played the game at a pace that the Roscommon girls found difficult to live with. Roscommon began with two debutants, Joan Geoghegan and Tess Murtagh and two players, Jenny Higgins and Amanda McLoone who were making their first start of the year.
From the outset the visitors struggled to keep with their fleetfooted opponents and can thank Helena Cummins in goals who kept them in touch with some great saves as Meath broke through their defence time and time again. By half time the Royals led by 1-5 to 0-3 the goal coming from centre forward Emma Duggan after a flowing move. Jenny Higgins got the Rossies off with an excellent point and their other scores came from two frees from the accurate boot of full forward Rebecca Finan. Amanda McLooone defended valiantly and made a number of excellent blocks and interceptions and Helena saved the day on a number of occasions including one excellent save from dangerous corner forward Stacy Grimes.
Roscommon introduced experienced players Sinead Kenny and Joanne Cregg at half time and the new look m

idfield of Cregg and Higgins combined well from the throw in to send Higgins forward for and good point. However any respite for the visitors was short lived as Meath cut throw their defence before Grimes netted. The meath half backs pushed forward at every opportunity and Roscommon struggled to cope with their pace and teamwork. They tried hard to get back into the game and had ample possession but found breaking down the Royal defence problematic although Jenny Higgins in particular never gave up the chase and added another point after a good run. Katie Day and Siobhan Cummins worked hard but found the surface difficult to deal with as many Roscommon girls pulled up with cramps and aches as the second half progressed. When corner forward Emma White scored Meaths third goal after a poor kick out the game was effectively over as a contest. Joan Geoghegan finished a good move to the Meath net after good work by Laura Fleming before a defected shot ended up in the Roscommon net.

The Roscommon ladies will want to forget about this result as they prepare for the remainder of their league fixtures. It was a day they will want to forget and they may get an opportunity to avenge this defeat later in the campaign.
