County Underage Update:
Last Friday evening in Cloone Co leitrim saw the first championship games for our Stephen McGuinneass sponsored U14 girls and the Cox’s Steakhouse Dromod minor girls when they took on the home team in round one of the Connacht Championship. This new format of doubling up on the two grades proved to be a great success as a large crowd turned up to cheer on all teams. Unfortunately It proved to be an evening of contrasting fortunes for the visitors as our minor side ran out convincing winners, but it was the complete opposite for our U14’s as they succumbed to a surprisingly heavy defeat at the hands of Leitrim. This was not the start they needed but time is still on their hands as the strive to turn it around. On the plus side it was a good start for the minors as they begin their quest for provincial honors.
Here is a brief report from each encounter:
Visitors crushed by the home side in Friday night gloom in Cloone.
Roscommon 3-09 Leitrim 11-10
In the curtain raiser to the Minor game our McGuinness Plumbing & Heating Tarmonbarry Sponsored U-14 girls had an unforgettable evening in Cloone as the lost out heavily to Leitrim in the first round of the Connacht Championship. Leitrim dominated all sectors of the field but were particurarly strong in the midfield and full forward areas. The bombarded the very potent full forward line of Muireann Devanny, Riona McKeon and Olwyn Moore who scored a whopping 11-09 between them. Roscommon didnt give up the fight and scored 5-08 on the evening. Manager Martin Murphy will have to rally his troops and look for a win against Sligo on Saturday afternoon next at a Sligo venue.

Ros girls pull away after slow start
Roscommon 3-14 Leitrim 1-11.
Cox’s Steakhouse Dromod sponsored Roscommon minor ladies got their Connacht Championship campaign off to a winning start when the took on Leitrim at a extremely wet and windy Cloone GAA Grounds on Friday evening last. Leitrim who already had a game against Sligo under the belts started the brighter run into a three point lead within the opening ten minutes. Once Sinead Glennon goaled for the Roscommon in the tenth minute the visitors took over and led by 2-09 to 0-06 at the break. The second half was played in monsoon like conditions and was a much closer affair botsh sides scoring 1-05 a piece in the second half to leave the full time score Roscommon 3-14 Leitrim 1-11. The joint managers Grace O’Brien and Carol Manning will be pleased with the performance from their players under the conditions and can look forward to their visit to Sligo to take on the Yeats ladies on Saturday afternoon next.
