County Underage Update – Heart break for U16’s as minors fall to classy Meath

In a week that started with such optimism ended in heartache as both our U16’s and our minors lost their all-Ireland semi-finals at the hands of Kildare and Meath respectively. The u16’s in particular will feel very hard done by as the lead by six points with just a few minutes left and ended up conceding two penalty’s to lose out by two points. The minors fought back bravely in the first half to trial by just two points at the break but defending all-Ireland champions Meath blitzed them at the start of the second period to run out comfortable winners in the end. Here is a brief summary of each game with a full detailed report appearing elsewhere in this publication.

U16 Update: Heart break in kinnegad

Tommy Berne’s U16 girls experienced the cruelest of heart break in their all-Ireland semi-final against Kildare on Wednesday last at the splendid Kinnegad venue when with two minutes of normal time remaining they lead the Lilly whites by five points only for kildare to convert two penalty’s and a late free to run out two point winners on a score line of 3-08 to Roscommon’s 1-12 and leave the Roscommon girls devastated. It was the cruelest possible way to lose a game that Roscommon had dominated for such long periods but unfortunately sport can be cruel sometimes and these girls learned a harsh lesson last week. A full detailed match report appears elsewhere in this publication.  for now we wish these girls and their management all the best in their future careers and thank them for their mighty effort for the year gone and also to their parents and finally to their sponsors Fleming’s Supervalu, Kildea Concrete, James Irwin Construction, and XLnt signs. No doubt they will have their day in the sun yet.

Roscommon: Sasha Lavin, Emma Kildea, Saoirse Wynne, Aisling Walshe, Kate McPhilips, Megan Kelly, Jennifer Brennan, Kate Nolan, Ellen Irwin, Sarah McVeigh, Kelley Colgan, Kayleigh Shine (1-8), Laureen Shanagher, Natasha Munnelly (0-2) and Kara Earle (0-2). Subs: Michaela Keaneney, Holly Martin, Edel Byrne, Emma Curran, Tia Cronin, Caoimhe Galvin, Aine Griffin, Shona Hanley, Kate harrington, Oonnagh Kelly, Megan McKeown, Michaela Keogh, Sheena Kilroe and Aime O Connor.

Minor update. Minors run ends at the hands of classy Meath

For the second year in succession Our Cox’s steakhouse sponsored Minors lost out in the championship on  Saturday last  to the same opposition when the were defeated by defending champions Meath on a score line of 4-11 to 2-07. In a repeat of last years final both sides battled it out in a tight first half and left everyone waiting with great hope of something similar in the second half but it was the royal girls who playing with the aid of a strengthen wind upped the anti in the second period and had two goals and a few points on the board before Roscommon could respond. To their credit Roscomm never gave up and indeed it was them that finished the strongest but alas it was two late and it was Meath who progressed to a final meeting with Clare.

Roscommon: Marie Kelly, Meabhe Tiernan, Shannon Dowd, Aoife MacLaughlin, Amy Curley, Roisin Wynne, Shaunna Fleming,  Sinead Glennon (2-1), Sarah Scally (0-1), Louise Brady (0-2, 1F), Sinead farrell, Michaela McHugh, Laureen Curran, Niamh Shanagher (0-2)and Ciara Corcoran (0-1F). Subs: Eadoin Lennon, Amy Quinn, Sarah Hoare, Amy Malone, Jullie Healy, Niamh Fleming, Shannon Caulifield, Emmer McNally, Alanna Hanmore, Aine Mullins, Elaine McDermot, Rachael Gallagher and Caoimhe O Dowd.
