County Underage Update:

Connacht Championship’s continue.

Minor A Connacht Final:

Catch me if you can: Roscommon’s Sinead Farrell sprints past Galway’s Amy Coen in last Monday’s Connacht decider in Ballyhanus.

Roscommon fade after bright start in Connacht Final

Galway 5-12 Roscommon 1-04:

The Cox’s Steakhouse Dromod minor girls took on Galway in their Connacht final on Monday last in Ballyhanus and despite a bright start from the Rossies Galway’s strength and pace along with some very strong forward play it was to prove not to be a good day for the Roscommon girls as they lost out to what was in the end a heavy defeat to the tribes girls on a score line of 5-12 to 1-04.

the score line was a little harsh on the Roscommon girls as for the opening 25 minutes of the game there was very little between the sides, in fact until Galway got their second goal on the stroke of half time there was only two points between the sides.

After a frantic opening 12 minutes Roscommon opened the scoring with a Louise Brady point. This was after a sustained period of Galway attacks which resulted in no score due in no small measure to some very stout Roscommon defending. However Galway finally got on the score board in the 13th minute with a point. This was quickly followed in the 15th minute with the first of their goals when center forward Leanne Coen burst through the Roscommon defense. But Roscommon responded in a terrific fashion when a great move resulted in Sarah Scally crashing a superb shot to the net in the 20 minute to leave them ahead again. Galway’s response was three unanswered points and then the decisive second goal arrived for Galway in the 28th minute when ???? broke through the Roscommon defense. Both teams exchanged a point apiece after this with Roscommons coming from a Ciara Corcoran Free. Galway had the final say with another point before the break to leave them leading 2-05 to 1-02 at half time, a little harsh perhaps on the Roscommon girls.

Whatever notions of a comeback Roscommon had were quickly extuinished in the opening three minutes of the second half as Galway struck twice with goals from ???? and ????. Suddenly the game went flat the heart had been ripped out of Roscommon. Galway were now in full control and added six more points before Roscommon opened their second half account in the 51st minute with another Corcoran Free. Whatever small glimpse of a Roscommon revival might was firmly dashed again in the 55 minute when they goaled again through corner forward ????. This was the final nail in Roscommon’s coffin but to their credit they never gave up and got the last score of the game through another Corcoran pointed free but their game was up and as the whistle sounded Galway were deserving champions on a score line of 5-12 to 1-04.

Roscommon Team:, Marie Kelly, Amy Quinn, Shannon Dowd, Aoife McLoughlin, Amy Curley, Roisin Wynne, Shauna Flemming, Amy Malone, Sarah Scally (1-0), Ciara Corcoran (0-3 F), Sinead Farrell, Louise Brady (0-1), Lauren Curran, Niamh Shanagher and Sinead Glennon.

Subs: Mikaela McHugh for Malone (HT), Alanna Hanmore for Curran (HT), Sarah Hoare for Curley (HT), Shannon Caulfield for Scally (50min) and Elaine McDermott for Quinn (55min).

Other panel members: Eadaoin Lennon, Julie Healy, Eimear McNally , Rachel Gallagher, Aine Mullins, Niamh Flemming, Hetti Cahill, and Heater Payne.

Roscommon Minor Panel which took part in the Connacht Final on Monday last in Ballyhanus.

Player of the Match: Galway’s number 13 ???? she was a threat throughout and chipped in with 7 points from play. Also good from Galway were ??? and ???. Best for Roscommon were Louise Brady, Marie Kelly and Shauna Fleming.

Turning Point: Galway’s second goal just before half time just when Roscommon were hoping to hold onto what they had and get to half time only a few points behind.

What’s Next: Galway go forward and meet Dublin in the all-Ireland “A” semi-final in July while Roscommon play off with Sligo for the right to represent the province in the “B” all-Ireland semi.

U16 Update:

Our Kildea Concrete, James Irwin Construction, XLnt signs sponsored U16’s face Sligo in Ballintober (St Croans) this Friday the 12th May in their final group match. If they defeat Sligo they will have guaranteed their place in the A final against Galway a terrific achievement.
