U16

U16’s take Mayo scalp in epic encounter:

The Tommy Beirne led XLnt signs, kildea Concrete, James Irwin construction sponsored U16’s produced their performance of the year when they defeated a fancied Mayo side in Swinford on Saturday last in an epic encounter which ebed and flowed throughout until a final ten minute burst in the second half saw the visitors stamp their authority on proceedings and win out on a score line of Roscommon 2-14 Mayo 2-10.

Roscommon began with the aid of a strong wind and began fast when midfielder Kate Nolan goaled after just 1 minute. This was followed up with points from Aimme O Connor (3) Kayleigh Shine and Kelley Colgan to leave the Rossies in a nice position, but the home side battled back and added 2 points of their own. O Connor added another for the visitors to leave them sitting nicely with 20 mins gone, up by 1-6 to 0-3. The home side bounced back though and a goal from full forward Finola Collins with another point added. Suddenly  they were on the comeback. Roscommon added another point through Colgan but Mayo goaled again through Collins again to leave them ahead perhaps a little against the run of play. Both sides exchanged another point apiece before the break to leave Mayo leading 2-05, 1-07.

Facing into the elements Roscommon were a different animal in the second half. They tore into Mayo and points from Kara Earle and O’ Connor left them a point up after 40 mins, indeed if it were not for some wayward shooting in front of goal they could have been further ahead.  Mayo refused to go away though and kept in touch with two points of their own as the sides were level with 15 to go. Then a significant breakthrough came when O Connor now operating at full forward got her goal on 47mins, this was quickly followed by two shine points to suddenly leave Roscommon leading by 4. Mayo answered with a point but Roscommon added two more through a Colgan free and another Earle point to leave Roscommon leading by six with ten remaining. The home side tried to get that crucial breakthrough goal but were unable to penetrate a resolute Roscommon defense. They did cut the gap to four points with a couple of minutes remaining but Roscommon also added another point of their own from Earle to leave them winners on a score line of 2-14 to 2-10.
